The short version

We count our visitors and we watch which parts of the page get read, using our own equipment. We never learn who you are, and we never share anything with anybody. There are no ads, no ad companies, and no “partners.”

What we write down

A ticket number. When you visit, we hand your browser a ticket with a random number on it (a small file called a cookie, named mw_id). It works like a coat-check ticket: the number means nothing by itself, and there is no name on it. It just lets us notice “this browser has been here before” — that is how we know whether folks come back.

When you visited and what you looked at. The date and time, and which page.

Which parts get read. The page quietly keeps count of how many seconds each section is on your screen — the current conditions, the hourly strip, the written forecast, the week ahead — and how far down the page you got. That tells us what is worth our effort. It never sees what you type (there is nothing to type) and it cannot see anything outside this page.

Where you came from. If another website sent you here, we write down that site's name — just the name, like “google.com.”

Your browser's name. Something like “Safari on an iPhone.” Mostly this helps us tell people apart from robots.

What we never collect

Your name. Your email. Your phone number. Your address. Your location. Your internet address (called an IP address) — our equipment sees it for the moment it takes to send you the page, like any website must, but we do not write it down, ever. Nothing about what you do on any other website. Nothing to sell, because we sell nothing and we never would.

Where it all lives

On our own computer. Not in some big company's cloud, not with an “analytics provider,” not with anyone.

One honest footnote: like nearly every website, the connection between you and us is carried by an internet delivery company (ours is called Cloudflare) that protects the site from attacks. It handles the traffic in transit, the way the phone company carries a phone call. Our records of your visit never go to it or to anyone else.

If you'd rather not

Some browsers can send a signal that says “please don't keep track of me” (it is called Global Privacy Control). If your browser sends it, we don't hand you a ticket at all — you're just an anonymous reader, and the site works exactly the same.

You can also tell your browser to block or delete cookies for this site any time. Nothing breaks. The forecast doesn't care.
